eSIM not working: what to check first

If the eSIM profile is installed but mobile data does not work, the cause is usually a setting: data line selection, network registration, roaming, or APN.

Start with the quick checklist below. Most issues can be fixed in a few minutes without contacting support.

Quick checklist (2-5 minutes)

  • Make sure the eSIM is selected as the Mobile Data line (Settings > Cellular > Mobile Data).
  • Turn Mobile Data off/on, then toggle Airplane mode. Wait 10 seconds between toggles.
  • Restart the phone fully (not just lock/unlock).
  • Check that the eSIM line is active and you have signal bars.
  • Try Network selection: Automatic (or manually pick a network from the list).
  • If needed, enable Data Roaming for the eSIM line — some profiles require this.
  • Check APN settings and compare with the activation details you received.

Common causes

  • The eSIM is installed, but the main SIM is still selected for mobile data.
  • The plan only activates when the device registers on the destination network — no data until you arrive.
  • The phone chose the wrong network or has no signal (common right after landing).
  • Data Roaming is off for the eSIM line (iOS: Settings > Cellular > eSIM > Data Roaming).
  • VPN conflict: try disabling any VPN and test the connection.

iPhone-specific tips

  • Settings > Cellular > check that Mobile Data points to the eSIM line.
  • Settings > Cellular > eSIM line > Turn On This Line + Data Roaming.
  • If nothing helps: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings (this clears Wi-Fi passwords but often resolves the issue).

Android-specific tips

  • Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > select eSIM > Use SIM for Mobile Data.
  • Enable Data Roaming for the eSIM line.
  • If nothing helps: Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
  • Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Mobile Data > select eSIM.

FAQ

Why is there no internet even though the eSIM is installed?

Most commonly, the eSIM is not selected as the Mobile Data line, the phone has not registered on the network yet, or a roaming/APN setting is missing. Toggle Airplane mode, restart, and re-check data line selection.

Do I need to enable Data Roaming for the eSIM?

Often yes. Many eSIM profiles require Data Roaming to be on for the eSIM line (not your home SIM) to connect to the network.

What if none of the steps help?

Try deleting the eSIM profile and re-installing it (re-scan the QR code). If that doesn't work, contact your eSIM provider support.
